24.08.2008 - Championship Finals
LADIES COMPLETE TROPHY CLEANSWEEP

This afternon Clan Ladies completed a clean sweep of all trophys in the 2008 season with a well deserved 2-10 to 1-09 victory over Cormac McAnallens in the Championship Final.

Report by Edwin McGreal courtesy of The Irish Echo

With twenty minutes gone in this decider McAnallens led Clan naGael 1-6 to 0-1 and would have been further ahead had Clan ‘keeper Keli Maihi not made three crucial saves but it didn’t seem to matter, surely there could only be one winner? But somehow Clan naGael morphed into a altogether more potent unit and outscored their opponents by 2-10 to 0-3 for the rest of the game with a performance that was as excellent as it was surprising given their slow start. Clan would go onto dominate in practically every sector of the field but in the opening stages there was only one team in it as McAnallens flew from the blocks.

Midfielder Etaine O’Kane pointed three frees, only interrupted by an Eimear Guckian point at the other end, before McAnallens struck for a goal on 12 minutes. Suzie Toomey and Amy Kissane combined to send lively corner-forward Caroline Murphy through and she made no mistake. O’Kane, Roisin Howlin and Murphy added three more points and McAnallens could have been out of sight were it not for three smart saves from Keli Maihi from Kissane, Murphy and Howlin. It didn’t appear to matter but Clan made a few key tactical switches to bring them back into the game. Midfielder Marie Looney was sent back to do a very effective job on Caroline Murphy, Linda Connolly was brought to midfield where she covered miles of ground while Martina O’Brien was released to centre-half forward to considerable effect.

Classy corner-forward Emily Hamill and O’Brien pointed to settle Clan and when full-forward Katie Kenneally found the net on 24 minutes, the game was very much back on. Hamill pointed on the half-hour and Clan had the perfect tonic going in at half-time when a Trish Aspell goal right on the whistle left them 2-4 to 1-6 up. With Linda Connolly and Claire Mullen now on top at midfield and players like Best and Fairest winner Karen Doyle at centre-back, superb wing-forward Leanne Higgins and tenacious wing-back Donna Kelly being influential, Clan kicked on in the third quarter. Two frees from Connolly and points from play from Eimear Guckian and Emily Hamill were countered only by an Etaine O’Kane free for McAnallens as Clan opened a four point lead.

McAnallens were not giving up by any manner of means however and points from Amy Lou Hazleton and a free from the excellent O’Kane, either side of a Connolly free, left it at a three point game with three minutes remaining. But Clan were able to close out the game effectively and a superb long range free from Connolly and a good point from play from Guckian left Clan naGael five to the good and secured the clean sweep of both pre-season tournaments, league and championship for Joe McGinty’s charges. Afterwards winning captain Norma Kelly accepted the cup from Peter Canavan.
